McGill hospitals select Opera for OR management

MONTREAL – Opera, a surgical episode and OR resources management software system used in many Quebec hospitals and European healthcare facilities, will be installed in the McGill University Health Centre in the coming weeks. The agreement between the MUHC and CHCA, the company behind the solution, is now official, and project planning is under way.

“With the signing of this important healthcare institution, Opera has confirmed its leading position in Canada and has added another respected name to its list of internationally recognized academic hospital clients,” said Nelson Lafond, business development director for CHCA.

In keeping with the decision made a few years ago by the Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM), the MUHC has chosen to integrate software created by this established Quebec company.

“The deployment of the CHCA Opera suite at the MUHC is one of the major technological transition and collaboration projects initiated by the MUHC and CHUM as part of the redevelopment of these major Montreal university health centres,” said Jean Huot, director of technological resources for the MUHC and CHUM. “Our goal is to offer the best functionalities to our clinicians and managers.”

“In addition,” said Huot, “it is important that we standardize and integrate the common systems used by both health centers, and we have evaluated Opera as our best option for the computerization of our operating room suites.”

Opera allows the entire range of operating room planning activities to be managed in a multi-site environment. It also offers advanced material management functions and real time management of all clinical and statistical data during surgery and in the postoperative phase.

The Opera system is currently distributed in more than a dozen countries and, with more than 200 client sites, is considered as the leader on the Canadian and European markets.

World-renowned health centers
With more than 20,000 employees and over 1,5 million patient visits per year, the CHUM and the MUHC are multi-site tertiary care and teaching facilities in Montreal specializing in clinical care, research, teaching and the evaluation of healthcare technologies and methods of intervention. Both are established on several sites in Montreal.
