UHN wins McKesson International Award

TORONTO – The University Health Network, in collaboration with Shared Information Management Services (SIMS), has won McKesson’s 2007 VIP Award in the Innovator category.

The only Canadian winner, the SIMS Patient Portal team received the award for its online patient portal, which has been highly successful in improving the overall care experience for breast cancer survivorship patients.

The portal gives patients an electronic glimpse of their patient chart, and also provides an online support community, educational materials, and links to resources. The SIMS Partnership is now expanding the program to other UHN areas, including diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

McKesson is an international health care services and information technology company that provides health care information technology services for hospitals, physicians and homecare. The annual VIP Award recognizes five health care organizations for their use of information technology to achieve substantial results in areas of quality, safety, and efficiency.

This is the second award for SIMS in the last two months. On June 12, the Emergency-General Internal Medicine Transformation Project team received the prestigious 3M Health Care Quality Team Award for their work in creating unique and sustainable solutions to improve patient flow in the Emergency Department.

A panel of industry experts served as judges for McKesson’s 2007 VIP Awards. The judges evaluated entries using a point scale to select winners in three categories: VIP Classic, Medication Management, and Innovator. Criteria used in selecting winners included: using technology to solve a business issue, project methodology, clinical and financial results and the methodology used to measure results.

Judges for the 2007 VIP Award included:

• Kent Gale, founder, managing partner and executive director of KLAS Enterprises, LLC

• Deborah Gash, vice president and chief information officer for Kansas City, Mo.-based Saint Luke’s Health System

• Lewis Redd, leader of Accenture’s Health and Life Sciences provider practice

• Alden Solovy, executive editor of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine and associate publisher for Health Forum, including H&HN’s Most Wired Magazine and Trustee

• Keith Van Camp, vice president of Information Services for St. Dominic–Jackson Memorial Hospital, Jackson, Miss.
