Aboriginal health data centre is launched in British Columbia

NANAIMO, B.C. – The Inter Tribal Health Authority (ITHA) announced the official launch of a unique health data centre, to service the health information needs of First Nations communities, through the use of state-of-the-art technology.

“The launch of the ITHA data centre, the first Aboriginal health data centre in Canada, is another step toward establishing a comprehensive e-Health centre of excellence,” said Terry Fox (pictured), Executive Director. “It’s about positioning First Nations health on the leading edge, by ensuring we are equipped with the latest technologies,” she added.

The use of technology is helping to provide better access to health services, and also clearly illustrates a First Nation owned-and-operated approach to research and information management, supported by the ITHA Board of Directors.

Located in Nanaimo (on the Snuneymuxw First Nation), the ITHA data centre launches its first application, the hosting of an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) application from Intrahealth Canada Ltd., known as Profile.

Powered by top-of-the-line servers, and thanks to advances in technology, the ITHA data centre takes up very little space with its two mid-sized cabinets – unlike data centres of a decade ago that took up an entire floor.

“Our partnership with ITHA in the implementation of Profile for First Nations communities has been very productive. Their use of their data centre with an Application Service Provider (ASP) model, aligns them very well with what is occurring elsewhere in BC,” said Dr. Mark Matthews, CEO of Intrahealth.

Profile is also being utilized by the Fraser and Vancouver Coastal Health Authorities.

“The ITHA data centre also opens the door to new partnership opportunities with Health Canada and the Province of British Columbia for an integrated approach to First Nations health delivery,” added Fox who noted the recently approved First Nations Health Plan in BC – the first in the country.

The Inter Tribal Health Authority is a key player in ensuring the health plan is successful, by moving forward with ITHA’s plans for a centre of excellence to directly support these First Nations healthcare developments.

The new data centre underpins ITHA’s vision for the establishment of a public-private-partnership currently under negotiation with Khiasma, a health transformation firm, and Ajilon, a global leader in Managed Services and Information Technology consulting. “In working together, we have focused on building a data centre that is capable of expanding to support e-health throughout British Columbia and beyond,” explained Fox.

ITHA is working with its corporate partners to develop a Data Centre and EMR expansion and sustainability model.

“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to work with ITHA in this exciting transformative initiative, said Murray Dion, President of Khiasma. “Ajilon looks forward to a mutually rewarding relationship with ITHA and to bringing Ajilon’s global capability and reach, to help ITHA achieve its vision,” said Norman Carr, President of Ajilon Canada.
