Vancouver to use grid storage for cardiology images

VANCOUVER – Bycast Inc., a leading provider of grid-powered storage management software, has announced that Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is expanding its StorageGRID system to provide a regional cardiac image library.

VCH will now extend its existing cardiac StorageGRID to serve three facilities: Lions Gate Hospital, St. Paul’s Hospital and Vancouver General Hospital. The deployment will add capacity and facilities without interruption.

VCH expects up to 80 terabytes or more of cardiology images to be generated over the next four years via GE Centricity Archive and Philips Xcelera PACS. These applications will rely on the StorageGRID powered library to protect and ensure high availability of the images.

Previously, application-specific tape libraries, DVD and MOD jukeboxes were being employed as near-line storage and backup, but these no longer satisfy the clinical performance requirements or practical disaster recovery.

The adoption of digital imaging has driven the need for better storage management that ensures fast, “always available” data access. Cardiology is particularly storage intensive – imaging studies can range from 100MB to in excess of 1.5GB.

According to the company, StorageGRID helps provide the high-availability environment for online access to cardiology studies required by physicians. Increasing clinical study volumes, new imaging modalities that generate larger data sets, challenges in supporting research demands and limitations of the previous archive technology were the leading business drivers for VCH. The clinical demands coupled with IT requirements to provide a cost-effective, scalable storage platform were key factors in VCH choosing to extend its use of StorageGRID.

StorageGRID will also enhance productivity for IT support staff that previously responded to frequent, time-consuming requests to retrieve off-line studies. Furthermore, StorageGRID simplifies storage management by delivering a virtualized storage system spanning three facilities, replacing multiple application-specific separate storage systems.

“It is incredibly rewarding to be helping improve the quality of healthcare in our own community,” said Moe Kermani, President and CEO of Bycast. “Vancouver Coastal Health is once again proving that good IT investments can improve the quality of care in a hospital.”
