British Columbia clinic to use CMA-backed software

CRESTON, B.C. – The MacKay Medical Clinic in Creston has become the first medical centre in British Columbia to use clinical management system software from Practice Solutions Software Inc., a Canadian Medical Association (CMA) company designed to help Canadian doctors manage their practices.

“We are a busy practice in a rural area, and we want to be able to care for our patients in the best way possible,” said Dr. Faye MacKay. “By managing our patient records, billing and scheduling electronically, we can spend more time with people and less time with paper.”

There are three physicians (one full-time and two part-time) at the MacKay Medical Clinic. With a roster of more than 3,000 patients, they had long recognized that technology could help reduce administrative time, allowing more focus on patients, but there didn’t seem to be a software program available that worked well for them.

“We are thrilled to be the inaugural site for Practice Solutions Software,” said Dr. MacKay. “Not only does this software work the way we work, we can help lead the way for other physicians in British Columbia to look at this kind of solution.”

The Practice Solutions software suite is the only practice software backed by the CMA. It offers electronic billing and scheduling, as well as an electronic medical records component that integrates, for example, patient profiles, progress notes, drug interactions and prescription writing.

“We have been working with Dr. MacKay and her team since May,” said Rob Thorpe, president of Practice Solutions Software Inc., which is based in Cambridge, Ont. “The software’s flexibility is such that it will perform equally well in small towns like Creston, as well as in urban centres. We look forward to meeting the growing demand in B.C.”

Acquired by the CMA in 2004, Practice Solutions Software Inc. was founded in 1982 as HealthCare Software Inc. and currently delivers software to more than 2,300 doctors at 750 medical clinics. Approximately 750,000 patient records are managed by Practice Solutions electronic medical records software. Practice Solutions Software Inc. and the other companies operating under the Practice Solutions brand offer end-to-end solutions in technology, leasing and practice management consulting services, and have deep roots with the CMA, their parent company.
