Sunnybrook implements wireless infrastructure

TORONTO Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Bell Canada and Symbol Technologies, Inc. have announced the launch of a wireless communications solution within the hospital.

This solution includes mobile computers, a wireless network infrastructure and management software to help improve patient care and operational efficiency campus wide.

Planned, deployed and integrated by Sunnybrook and Bell Canada, the enterprise mobility solution is part of an overall strategy using wireless networks and applications to improve workflow for better patient care and improved safety.

"As a leading hospital, Sunnybrook has high-levels of patient traffic with no room for downtime. Partnering with Bell Canada and Symbol made the process of evaluating, determining a solution, planning and deploying a wireless network very easy," said Oliver Tsai, Sunnybrook's director of information technology.

"Access control, deployments and software updates on a large scale were amongst our requirements when evaluating a wireless network, and the Bell Canada and Symbol wireless solution provided us with the security, flexibility and scalability required to enhance the overall patient experience."

The Bell Canada and Sunnybrook solution enables medical professionals to provide mobile point-of-care in the hospital with real-time access to clinical applications. Prior to deploying the secure Symbol wireless network infrastructure which consists of WS5100 wireless switches and AP300 access ports clinicians and nurses could only access and update patient information from computers at central nursing stations.

Using the Symbol wireless network infrastructure, MC50 and MC70 enterprise data assistants (EDA), and computers-on-wheels, Sunnybrook clinicians can access and update patient records, and better provide treatment when and where needed at the point of patient care.

This approach helps significantly improve the quality of patient care, enhance medical staff productivity and increase the accuracy of patient information shared throughout hospital locations.

"Collaboration of systems, suppliers and partners through integrated systems lets healthcare providers focus on delivery," said Paul Rowe, vice president, enterprise marketing, Bell Canada.

"As a leading provider of information communications and technology (ICT) solutions, this implementation at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is another example of how Bell Canada is contributing to the transformation of healthcare through the innovative application of technology. Integrated solutions such as this can save lives and costs."

Additionally, the Symbol MC70 EDA with an integrated barcode reader, will run software applications developed by Neoteric Technology Ltd. These applications when run in conjunction with Positive Patient identification programs will help reduce the number of medical errors associated with sample collection and transfusion management. The Neoteric programs in use at Sunnybrook are enhancing patient safety, reducing costs and providing a standard for caregiver-patient interactions.

"Symbol's rugged and sealed MC70 EDA meets the demands of healthcare customers such as Sunnybrook, seeking one device for communications and applications," said Ken Kleinberg, senior director of Symbol's healthcare industry solutions group. "The MC70 EDA can withstand multiple drops to concrete, run applications critical to a hospital's operations, and can be sprayed with cleaning solutions to help prevent the spread of germs in a hospital environment."
