Physician IT

600 docs now part of Ontario’s physician IT program

TORONTO – About 600 Ontario doctors are now aboard the OntarioMD physician IT program, which provides funding and support services for the acquisition and operation of clinical information systems in physician practices. The program, which was originally funded with $130 million, has now committed $19 million to the participants. The funds will be paid out over a three-year period.

Brian Forster, chief operating officer for OntarioMD, said 3,200 physicians are expected to participate in the physician IT program in the current three-year period (which has been active for about one year.)

As well, the OntarioMD web portal has gone live, with approximately 2,000 physicians having signed on for the service. It provided access to peer-reviewed journals and also offers secure e-mail through Smart Systems for Health Agency (SSHA).

The resources available on the web portal include:
• MD Consult
• Ovid MEDLINE
• SKOLAR MD
• STAT!Ref
• eCPS
• Epocrates MedTools

OntarioMD, which has occupied offices on King Street W. in Toronto, will move in June to the Ontario Medical Association headquarters, located on University Ave.

A new board of directors for OntarioMD was appointed earlier this year.
