Sleep Country Canada supports sleep lab at Toronto General

TORONTO – Sleep Country Canada has teamed up with the University Health Network, Toronto General Hospital to create the Sleep Country Canada Sleep Medicine Labs. Together, they aim to increase awareness of sleep problems and help people get the best rest possible.

The Sleep Country Canada Sleep Medicine Lab at Toronto General Hospital is the only sleep lab in Ontario capable of monitoring blood pressure, cardiac output and carbon dioxide levels simultaneously and continuously during sleep with a specialized portable device.

Trouble sleeping can be a serious a medical issue, estimated to affect approximately 5 million Canadians. The launch of the new Sleep Country Sleep Medicine Labs at Toronto General Hospital is a significant step forward in developing and promoting an education and awareness program targeting sleep and sleep disorders in the country, as well as enabling more people to get the treatment they need.

“Sleep Country is proud to partner with the Toronto General Hospital, University Health Network,” says Christine Magee, president of Sleep Country Canada. “By supplying this world-renowned hospital with top-quality mattresses and funding critical equipment upgrades, it is our goal to help Canadians suffering from sleep disorders get the treatment they need and find answers to their sleep questions.”

Inside this leading edge sleep centre, highly trained physicians and technicians use state-of-the-art equipment to research, diagnose and treat both common and rare sleep disorders - from sleep apnea and insomnia to narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome and more.

“There is no other sleep lab in the world that has the kind of patient clientele we serve,” says Dr. Douglas Bradley, Director of the Sleep Country Canada Centre for Sleep Health and Research at the Toronto General Hospital. “This is a medically intensive sleep laboratory and some of our patients suffer from heart disease or respiratory failure, which has a significant negative impact on their sleep.”

In a sleep lab, patients stay overnight in rooms that are free of light, disruption and noise. Sleep is recorded through observation and testing, where recordings of brain activity are taken to identify a person’s sleep pattern and other conditions. The support provided by Sleep Country will provide new state-of-the-art equipment for monitoring of sleep and sleep disorders and help the centre to intensify its research and improve treatment of sleep disorders.
