VIHA’s CEO moving to United Kingdom

VICTORIA – Howard Waldner, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, has been offered and accepted a position as chief executive of the newly formed health board in southwest Wales in the United Kingdom.

“I am leaving to take on an exciting opportunity to establish and develop an entirely new health authority to serve the needs of local residents,” said Waldner. “I remain deeply committed to VIHA and to Vancouver Island, and expect to maintain close ties with the Island.”

Mr. Waldner’s new appointment will take effect in October 2009. Until that time, he will remain with VIHA. An acting President and Chief Executive Officer for VIHA will be appointed in due course.

Mr. Waldner joined VIHA in October 2004 as CEO. Originally from Scotland, Mr. Waldner served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer with the Calgary Health Region for five years before joining VIHA.
