Eclipsys to purchase Canadian RIS company
BOCA RATON, Fla. & MONTREAL – Eclipsys Corp. has
announced its intent to acquire eSys Medical Systems Inc., a radiology
information system (RIS) company based in Montreal.
Under the terms of the agreement, eSys Medical will operate as a
subsidiary of Eclipsys and retain its offices in Montreal and Toronto.
Financial details related to the transaction have not been presented as
they do not materially affect Eclipsys’ financial position or results of
A key driver for the acquisition was eSys Medical’s RadioLogic product,
a full-featured RIS designed to facilitate administration, workflow
optimization and best practices in hospitals and diagnostic imaging
centers. RadioLogic provides both on- and off-site system access for
referring physicians, radiologists and transcribers.
Currently licensed by nearly 100 hospitals and outpatient imaging
centers, RadioLogic will be re-branded as Sunrise RIS immediately
following the completion of the acquisition.
With the addition and integration of Sunrise RIS, Eclipsys will extend
its clinical workflow solutions in radiology to boost productivity,
lower costs and enhance patient care. Using Eclipsys solutions,
clinicians will now be able to view patient medical records and
diagnostic images and reports in real time – from anywhere at anytime.
The acquisition also broadens and deepens Eclipsys’ diagnostic imaging
solution, opens up new Picture Archiving Communications System (PACS)
and RIS sales opportunities through integration with other clinical
order/results systems, and enhances the company’s leadership in the
healthcare information technology marketplace.
“This strategic acquisition represents a significant step toward
fulfilling our ongoing commitment to improving the delivery of patient
care by integrating clinical and operational information across
healthcare organizations,” said Paul L. Ruflin, Eclipsys president and
CEO. “We completed extensive due-diligence on more than 50 vendors and
determined that eSys Medical was the best choice for us in terms of
product functionality, domain knowledge, user interface, reference
sites, development process and management team. Not surprisingly, we are
very excited about this latest addition to the Eclipsys family.”
“Eclipsys is one of the truly great companies in healthcare,” said Dave
Glickman, eSys Medical Systems CEO. “We are thrilled to join the
Eclipsys team. This will enable us to offer our RIS not only as part of
a comprehensive diagnostic imaging solution, but also with Sunrise
Clinical Manager as part of an enterprise healthcare information system.
I see exceptional things ahead for eSys Medical, for Eclipsys and for
This latest acquisition builds upon Eclipsys’ co-development agreement
with Sectra AB, a leading PACS vendor. As such, Eclipsys will now be
able to offer a comprehensive, integrated imaging solution. As a
consequence of this acquisition, Eclipsys has created a new product
family that will be known as Eclipsys Diagnostic Imaging Solutions,
which will include Sunrise RIS and Sunrise PACS. This new product family
represents a convergence of technologies to form a unique integrated
Sunrise RIS will be integrated with Sunrise PACS and also with Sunrise
Clinical Manager. To maximize sales opportunities, Sunrise RIS will also
be sold by Eclipsys and its distributors as a stand-alone system that
can be interfaced with PACS or clinical systems from other vendors.
The Eclipsys Diagnostic Imaging Solution will be demonstrated at the
Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) annual meeting slated for
November 28 – December 3 in Chicago, Illinois, and at the Eclipsys User
